WA3VEZ – Howard Lefkowitz – SK

The WBCCI Amateur Radio Club has lost a valued member. Howard Lefkowitz (WA3VEZ) of the WBCCI’s Tech Committee passed away Sunday.

Those who go to the WBCCI’s International Rally will remember Howie for his standing room only maintenance seminars and his very informative columns in the Blue Beret.

Our heartfelt sympathy to Zoie and his family. Howie will be missed by us all.

Don Olejnik, W6KAT, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2015. Don was the Wagonmaster for the Pacific RV Service Net.

Don recently moved to a nursing home. His health quickly declined.

A Prayer Service for Don, W6KAT, will be held on Monday, September 14, 2015, 11am, at White Emerson Mortuary Chapel, Whittier, California. Interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California, will take place on Tuesday, September 15, 2015, at 11am.

Gene Beaver – W4PVI – SK



News on the Saturday morning (July 18, 2015) Eastern 40 Meter WBCCI RV Service Net was that Gene Beaver, W4PVI, passed away. He was feeling bad on Thursday then suffered a heart attack.

Gene was the net control operator for the second hour of the Eastern 40 Meter WBCCI RV Service Net on Saturdays.

Here is a copy of his obituary, which was published by the Wolf-Bayview Funeral Home in Foley, Alabama.

Gene Whitmore Beaver, 86, of Summerdale, Alabama passed away Thursday, July 16, 2015 surrounded by loved ones.

Mr. Beaver was preceded in death by his daughter, Bonnie Lynn Beaver, his parents, Kermit and Elizabeth Thompson Beaver, and his wife’s parents, Tyree and Blanche Jones.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy “Dottie”, daughter Jeannie Martin and son-in-law Lloyd of Granbury, Texas, daughter Terri Hanson and son-in-law Bob of Sandy, Utah, grandchildren, Eric, Taylor, Danielle, Zach and Bridget, brother Kermit, sisters Betsy Yarbrough and Beverly Smith-Petersen and many other relatives and friends.

Gene loved his family. He served his country for 21 years in the United States Navy and continued his love of adventure for the remainder of his life, RVing to all 50 states, flying power parachutes and ultralights, off-roading, waterskiing, and competing in pickleball and pool.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at the Marlow UMC on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 2:00 pm. A burial service in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida will be July 27, 2015 at 1:15 pm.

Dr Leon Curry W4TYM [SK]

Dr Leon Curry, W4TYM (SK) passed away Jun 8, 2015. The below obituary is from the Kennedy Funeral Home of Metter, GA. If you want to send a card to Helen, please use their address from his QRZ listing.

Dr. Leon Estese Curry of Metter, GA, a patriot, physician, and author, died after a 22 year battle with coronary disease. He was 78. Born in Jasper, Florida, he was a 1955 graduate of Metter High School. After Emory University and Emory Medical School, he served as an Army flight surgeon and commander of the 8th Medical Detachment. In 1965 he established one of the Vietnam War’s first medical camps at Ban Mê Thu?t. Upon his return to America, he practiced family medicine and nephrology at Medical Associates of Metter and Candler County Hospital, where he founded the first rural dialysis center in Georgia. He conducted some of the earliest research with childhood ADHD in the 1970s, and partnered with multiple universities on research projects. He was founder and leader of The Hypodermics, a popular big band. An instrument and commercial-rated pilot for more than 30 years, for a time he operated the local FBO. He served as Colonel commanding the 165th Medical Group, 165th Tactical Airlift Wing, Savannah. He was president of the Metter Road Runners RV Club, the Metter Ham Radio Club, and on the board of Candler County Hospital. His medical diagnosis experiments with Illinois psychic Greta Alexander were the subject of his book, The Doctor and The Psychic. He served as net control on the National Ham Radio RV Service Net. Dr. Curry was preceded in death by his parents, William Elliott Curry and Edna Estese Elliott Curry and a brother, Dr. Hiram Curry. Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Helen Tanner Curry of Metter; two sons, Stephen Curry of Birmingham, AL, and Chris Curry of Richmond Hill; a grandson, Zane Curry of Richmond Hill; a brother, Bill Curry (Bobbie), sister Sarah Grimes (Kelly), sister-in-law Sherry Maharrey, brother-in-law Bob Tanner (Diane), and numerous beloved family members. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am, Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the Metter United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Adams and Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Cemetery with Military Honors observed. Visitation will be Thursday, 9:00-11:00 am, at the church before the service. Pallbearers will be Terry Manuel, Dale Fordham, Ray Tootle, Kendall Gross, Larry Hadden and Mark Bland. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Dorsey Smith, Dr. Gary Branch, Dr. Roger Beville and staff of Candler/St. Joseph’s Medical Group and the Candler County Hospital Authority Board. The family appreciates flowers but prefers contributions to the Candler County Hospital Foundation. Guest book:

K0DOJ Dick Evans (SK)On the evening 20m Eastern/Central Net on July 7, KR4RR Tab mentioned K0DOJ Dick passed away July 2, 2009.  Dick was a past evening mgr of the 20m net, resided in Ft Lauderdale, FL.  Please provide to KE4TIL Frank any information on Dick’s history with the Club and hobby.  Frank is our Club’s new SK Manager, taking over for W1VYI Woody.

We’ll provide more details as available and appropriate.
